Newquay Ladies Championships 2017

Newquay Ladies Championships took place on the 2 and 3 September 2017.

3 Ladies crews had been training over the Summer to compete at Newquay. It was a first for a few of our members; they'd been told stories of large, choppy waves, gigs surfing on the final leg, rowers catching crabs, team members racing with one arm still in a coat, and not forgetting the infamous great storm of 2013. Our crews had been prepared for the swell of the Cornish sea ...and then we arrived a flat, calm sea .... not a 'proper Newquay sea' but it made for great, fast racing ................

Newquay Ladies is a bit different to some of the regatta racing; there's no time to waste getting to the start line, you're racing in a borrowed boat, you line up quick, you listen to the cox, and then you're off ...and they're strict....time penalties and some disqualifications all made for an eventful Newquay. Our 3 Swanage ladies crews rowed well; Ladies C rowed a great race after an unconventional start, Ladies B made it to round 2 and Ladies A made it to the quarter finals ...which as luck would have it, they moved it to the Saturday as Sunday's weather was looking so poor!. It meant that after a hard days racing, we'd finished our Newquay Championships, Ladies A came 16th, Ladies B came 28 and Ladies C 83rd out of approx. 96 crews.

And what can only be described as a Swanage tradition, we took to Newquay gig clubs bar to party in fancy dress as Sporting Icons ....and we were all allowed to celebrate and could stay out without a curfew .....a great end to a season of racing and training. Thanks from the Ladies to everyone who has helped with training, coxing and general support this year. Thanks!
