Swanage Juniors had the exciting opportunity to attend a new Junior Pilot Gig Sprint event in July organised by Langstone Cutters Gig Club in conjunction with the RN & RM Rowing Association. This unique event was held at the Royal Navy sailing Centre at HMS Excellent, Whale Island and HMS Bristol, their training ship, was our viewing point for the event. Newquay Ladies Championships took place on the 2 and 3 September 2017. 3 Ladies crews had been training over the Summer to compete at Newquay. It was a first for a few of our members; they'd been told stories of large, choppy waves, gigs surfing on the final leg, rowers catching crabs, team members racing with one arm still in a coat, and not forgetting the infamous great storm of 2013. Our crews had been prepared for the swell of the Cornish sea ...and then we arrived .....

It's been a great summer of regattas ...we've been taking part in the Jurassic Gig Rowing league, against some of our lovely gig rowing neighbours and attending a few of our favourites further afield - Clovelly and Rame. 3 crews, 2 Ladies and 1 Men, from SSRC participated in the Great Rive Race last weekend (8 September 2017). For those of you who don't know what it is, it's just a gentle row down the Thames taking in the sights of our capital ...well, it's just under 22 miles.....and nearly 3 hours of rowing ...and people race it! Our teams all did really well and had a great days rowing and were joined by many local clubs, including the Poole crew on the way.
